The rise of GLP-1 medications has transformed the weight loss landscape—and with it, consumers’ expectations and understanding of nutrition.
A recent survey by FMCG Gurus found that 65% of U.S. consumers taking GLP-1 medications believe monitoring nutrients like fiber and protein is important for maintaining health. At the same time, 73% of this group are concerned about regaining weight after stopping the medication. Interest in natural support is also on the rise: 58% of consumers—both medicated and non-medicated—say they’re looking for foods and beverages that naturally promote GLP-1 release.
“This data points to a growing demand for formulation with purpose,” says Denisse Colindres, senior manager of nutrition communication at BENEO, a global ingredient supplier specializing in plant-based, functional ingredients. “Consumers want nutrient-dense, functional foods that will help them manage weight while preserving muscle mass and balanced nutrition.”
Below, Colindres explains how the right ingredients can support the nutritional needs of anyone interested in managing their weight—whether they’re taking GLP-1s or not.
What are the biggest nutritional challenges for people taking GLP-1s or trying to lose weight without medication?
Whether someone is using a GLP-1 receptor agonist or following a traditional calorie-restricted diet, one of the biggest challenges is getting enough nutrients despite a reduced appetite. Many people eat less—but not necessarily better—which can lead to deficiencies in protein, fiber, vitamins, and minerals that are critical for metabolic health. There’s now clear evidence that adults using GLP-1 medication face increased risk of muscle loss and micronutrient deficiencies if they don’t optimize their nutrition.
Can certain types of ingredients stimulate the release of natural GLP-1? If so, how and which ingredients?
Most nutrients will stimulate GLP-1 release. The difference in the effects and health benefits can depend on the mechanism of release, and this is where formulation can truly make a difference.
Glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) is a natural, gut-derived hormone that is released after we eat. It has beneficial effects such as blood glucose control and appetite reduction. GLP-1 is released by the L-cells located in the lower parts of the small intestine and is triggered by nutrients arriving there.
Prebiotic fibers from chicory root have been shown to stimulate the secretion of gut hormones such as GLP-1. Beyond their role in digestive health, they also contribute to balanced blood sugar levels when replacing sugar in formulations. BENEO’s Orafti Inulin and Oligofructose provide chicory root fiber, which promotes a significant reduction in body weight, body mass index, fat mass, waist circumference, and to a certain extent, body fat percentage. This has been shown in a recent study.
Similarly, while all carbohydrates may lead to the release GLP-1, BENEO’s Palatinose, a slow-release sugar, causes a higher and longer-lasting secretion of GLP-1 than high glycemic carbohydrates. A recent study published in Molecular Nutrition & Food Research showed that intake of Palatinose stimulates the release of beneficial gut hormones, including GLP-1, in overweight adults, even if its consumption is followed by a meal, benefiting metabolic parameters that are important for maintaining a healthy body weight, blood glucose control, and cardiovascular health.
How can plant-based functional ingredients help overcome the nutritional challenges associated with taking GLP-1s or trying to lose weight without medication?
When food scientists choose plant-based ingredients that are developed to support weight loss, they can create nutrient-dense, functional foods that are well-suited for today’s weight management needs—whether consumers are on GLP-1s or not. For example, to help meet elevated protein needs and support muscle maintenance, food scientists might use BENEO’s rice and faba bean protein products. Combined, they offer a complete amino acid profile and prioritize plant proteins. BENEO’s Palatinose, a slow-release, low-glycemic carbohydrate, provides sustained energy without sudden rises in blood sugar and supports a higher natural GLP-1 response. Plus, it boosts hydration, which is another need for the GLP-1 community.
Can you provide examples of foods or beverages that are effective in supporting long-term weight management?
Plant-based ingredients that support weight management objectives can be used to formulate a wide variety of food and beverages. Chicory root fibers are easily incorporated into fruit preparations, dairy and dairy alternatives, cereals, frozen desserts, and beverages. Thanks to their texturizing properties, they can also reduce the sugar and fat content in foods while reducing the caloric content.
As mentioned above, plant-based proteins from rice and faba bean add protein enrichment, support satiety and muscle maintenance, helping counter the lean mass loss commonly observed with rapid weight loss during GLP-1 therapy. Rice ingredients are helpful in gluten-free applications such as cookies, as well as fat-reduced dairy products, while BENEO’s faba bean protein concentrate can be used for protein enrichment and as an alternative to animal-derived protein like eggs in baked goods, dairy, or meat alternatives.
These ingredients don’t just bring macronutrients; they also help to formulate with purpose, providing targeted health support, great taste, and flexibility.
