Food Technology Magazine | Presidents Message
What an honor it is to write to you for the first time as president of the Institute of Food Technologists. I’ve been part of IFT for many years, but I can honestly say this moment feels like a full-circle experience—and I’m deeply grateful.
I first got involved with IFT as an insecure student, presenting my research at a New York IFT Section Supplier’s Night. I’ll never forget standing next to my poster, surrounded by impressive technical professionals, feeling like I wasn’t quite sure I belonged. But what happened next changed everything: people stopped to ask questions, to get to know me, to encourage me. That single evening opened a door, not just to a network, but to a community.
From that point on, I was hooked. IFT gave me confidence. It gave me mentors, lifelong friends, and opportunities to grow in ways I never imagined. Throughout my academic career and my time in industry—including my recent role as vice president at Bigelow Tea—IFT has been a steady source of support, learning, and connection.
So yes, stepping into this role as board president is incredibly meaningful. It feels like the culmination of my career and an opportunity to give back to the community that helped shape me.
And what a time to be part of IFT.
This summer, at IFT FIRST, I saw that same spirit of community and connection alive and well. Whether it was students presenting research, professionals exchanging ideas in the Expo Hall, or members engaging with new technologies like CoDeveloper, powered by IFT—there was energy and purpose at every turn.
Watching the next generation in action brought back vivid memories. One of my favorite IFT moments of all time was sitting in the audience as a proud mom—cheering on my son’s Penn State team as they won the College Bowl. He’s a food scientist too, and IFT has been part of his journey just as it’s been part of mine.
As I look ahead to this coming year, I see IFT leaning into what we do best—bringing people together, sharing knowledge, and staying curious about what’s next. We’re finding new ways to share trusted, science-based insights with the world. We’re creating more opportunities for people to connect, learn, and grow—whether you’re just starting out or leading big ideas. And we’re continuing to show how food science can make a real difference—for public health, for the planet, and for the future. It’s an exciting time for IFT, and I couldn’t be more honored, or more energized, to help guide us forward.
But we can’t do it alone.
The strength of this organization lies in all of you—your expertise, your passion, your ideas. Whether you’re just beginning your career or have decades of experience, your voice matters here. I encourage you to stay engaged, get involved, and help us continue building a vibrant, supportive, and impactful IFT community.
Finally, I want to thank Dr. Chris Daubert for his exceptional leadership and tireless commitment over the past year. Chris has guided IFT with vision, heart, and a deep dedication to supporting students and professionals alike. I’m honored to follow in his footsteps and continue the work of moving IFT forward.
Thank you for welcoming me into this new role. I’m excited for what’s ahead, and I look forward to taking this journey with all of you.ft
